Varuna (Capparidaceae)

Overview

Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) is a deciduous tree growing up to about 33 ft (10 m), with smooth bark, pale yellow flowers, and lanceolate leaves. In Ayurveda, the bark is a key remedy for kidney and bladder disorders, specifically for preventing and treating kidney stones.

Traditional uses & properties

Kidney & Bladder Tonic: Research shows varuna inhibits the formation of kidney stones and improves bladder tone, aiding in small stone passage. Urinary Infections: Has antiseptic properties; used for chronic UTIs, cystitis, or urinary difficulties linked to prostate enlargement. Other Traditional Uses: In Ayurveda for “cold, damp” conditions, including bronchitis and certain skin disorders; also for snake bite (externally), as well as vomiting and fever. Anti-Inflammatory: Mildly so, supporting the removal of unwanted acids and residues in the urinary tract.

Safety & precautions

Professional Supervision: Advised, especially for persistent or recurrent kidney stones. General: Considered safe in moderate doses but consult a practitioner if combining with other diuretics or if pregnant.

Habitat

Widespread throughout India, varuna often thrives near riverbanks. It’s propagated from seed in spring; the bark is harvested year-round, while leaves are typically picked in spring.
