Overview

Rue (Ruta graveolens) is a strongly aromatic evergreen perennial reaching about 3 ft (1 m), with fleshy, lobed blue-green leaves and yellow-green, five-petaled flowers. Historically revered for its medicinal and magical properties, rue was employed by the Greeks and Egyptians for menstrual stimulation and eyesight improvement.

Traditional uses & properties

Emmenagogue & Uterine Stimulant: Encourages menstruation, can help with absent or delayed periods (not if pregnant). Antispasmodic & Digestive: Helps to relieve colic, intestinal worms, and occasional mild digestive complaints. Eye & Vision: Traditionally used in washes or as a mild infusion to soothe strained eyes. Nervine (Historical Uses): Once employed for hysteria, vertigo, epilepsy, and colic, though less common today.

Safety & precautions

Pregnancy: Stimulates uterine contractions; do not use. Fresh Plant & Photosensitivity: Can cause dermatitis and make skin more reactive to sunlight. Wear gloves while handling. Toxic in Excess: Use small, supervised doses for short durations.

Habitat

Native to the Mediterranean region, rue prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It can be cultivated in many warm climates. Harvest the aerial parts in summer when the plant is flowering.
